The Tide is Rising

Yes, it’s here.

I realize that, back at the end of February, I said Rising Tides, Capes Book 1, was finished. And it was. Then my principle readers plowed through the “finished” manuscript, and each of them individually, without coordination, told me There Was A Problem. And there was. That problem is now fixed, but required the rewriting of a major character. No plot changes (whew!), but still it required me to revisit at least half the story’s scenes and do some extensive dialogue rewrites.

And now it’s finished. Not only finished, but up on Amazon for pre-release as I get the paperback edition formatted. Both are coming out on April 26th, and I want to thank everyone for their patience.

And, pleasingly, just the announcement on the Wearing the Cape Facebook pages was enough to briefly bump the title into the #1 slot in one of its Amazon categories. I say briefly because the superhero categories remain swamped with RPGlit, Harem Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, and other nonsuperhero titles (the ratio of superhero-to-nonsuperhero books in the various categories is roughly 1/10).

With that in mind, I would appreciate it if you, my generous and patient readers, would do what you can to boost awareness of the new superhero story. Drop the link on Facebook. Blast it on Twitter. Review it on your blog when it comes out. Buy copies and throw them at your friends. Well, not that last one, it could be misconstrued.

Thank you.

MGH

(P.S.: I started out this post thinking I would talk about Rising Tides and what I hoped to accomplish with it. Then I realized that doing that would have required either frustrating teasers or extensive spoilers. So I’ll save that post for a few weeks from now. See you then.)

  1. Hey, unlike any number of eventually famous writers, you’re still willing to listen to your “editors”!

  2. Looking forward to your follow-on post in a few weeks.

I’ve got the Kindle version on pre-order, so I don’t expect to be doing much else next weekend.

  3. Congratulations on the new book! Is there an audiobook version of it planned, and if so any idea of when it might come out?

    1. There are no solid plans yet; the audiobook production company that did my first three WtC books hasn’t opted to put out the rest yet. I may pursue alternative arrangements.

  4. ….well that’s just great this book has ruined everything I tell you everything! About wearing the cape …now I have to buy TWO series!! Thanks a lot 😉

  5. Finished! Well done, I spent the entire first half convinced that “Red” was in fact the Asendancy cyber-guy Blackout? manipulating Kingston into rescuing one of their captured guys and the redhead thing was just a fake -out to throw us off.

so are we going to find out what this ‘problem’ was? I bet it was something to do with September.

      1. “each of them individually, without coordination, told me There Was A Problem. And there was. That problem is now fixed, but required the rewriting of a major character.”

I’d like to know, but my guess is it was calibrating September’s slide-into-the-dark-side arc.

    1. I thought for the whole first part of the book Red was for sure Shelly. She played the same kind of role as digital guide, had a similar protective/sarcastic personality (and of course hair color), and the whole virtual and real life version thing matches up. She even used the same shut-in line.

But maybe that’s what we were supposed to think? Either that or there’s a twist coming there.

      1. I will admit that was intentionally a bit of a head-fake. I knew that long-time readers would wonder if Red was Shell until the reveal.

      2. Two things.

        1. I will believe Fall of 2024 when I see it.
        2. Are you familiar with John Scalzi’s Lock In series? For a second when I read Red’s back story I this was going to tie in.
  6. I’ve just now realized…..what’s the in-universe reason for no Knights franchise in Chicago? The Sentinels are too popular/entrenched, and nobody who would rate being on a Knights team wants to be the de-facto “B-Team”?

    1. No. But that would have been cool. There’s a story behind my use of the names “Kingston” and “September.” I’ll post it on my next blog.

  7. Kingston was supposed to be a C-class jumper, but he seems to have been subject to power creep and now he is around A class for versatility and stamina even if he is D-class on range. Also, and this is all I will say on this topic: Cutter? I did not see that coming.I feel like Ripper would cheerfully extinct any rare bird species a la Tibbles the lighthouse cat.

  8. A few typos, if it matters. I’ll try and to the earlier chapters tomorrow.
